British Literature

9th-12th Grade

A year long survey of British Literature that will include poetry, short stories, drama, and novels, plus essay instruction. I will provide leveled feedback for the various grades represented in the class.

Socratic discussion and various class activities will be a large portion of each class, so make sure to read and come to class prepared.

​

Objectives

• To cultivate a critical understanding of literature 

• To recognize and analyze the various elements of different literary genres 

• To demonstrate critical thought through various activities: reading, writing, listening, speaking

• To communicate effectively in speech and writing


Literature selections are still being finalized; however, the year is shaping up to include:

  • Beowulf​

  • Canterbury Tales

  • A Shakespeare Play (Much Ado About Nothing)

  • A Christmas Carol

  • Various Poetry

  • Short Stories

  • The Importance of Being Earnest

  • The Hobbit

  • Brave New World or 1984

  • and passages from other works

Besides individual novels and plays, we will also be reading from the following book (required):


How to Read Literature Like a Professor: For Kids

by Thomas C. Foster

Although it says "kids" I believe it is appropriate for our level of study. The other version is geared for college level study and includes topics that parents may want to review first. So we will stick with this version.

Mondays at 9:00 AM (15 weeks in Fall and 15 weeks in Spring)
